Roping In Unique Basket Art

Marlene Roberts from Innisfail has created a series of decorative baskets through an innovative ropework technique. It’s more accurate to say she has created a plethora of baskets, since she loves the craft so much she can’t stop!

“I just find it really relaxing, so I’ll do it while I’m waiting for appointments or while we’re watching TV at night. I’m one of those people who has something constantly on the go,” said Marlene, who has more time on her hands now that she retired from over 30 years as a clerical assistant at the Chinook’s Edge board office.

“I did a dog bed out of ropework a few months ago. The dog is a bit of a princess, so it had to be pink! I love a challenge and I’ve even made decorative covers for racecar roll bars. People ask for the strangest things and I always find a way to deliver what they are looking for. I’m only five feet tall, so I learned how to alter my own clothes as a young child – it opened up a creative door for me.”

Now half of Marlene’s basement is set up for her art. She is a master seamstress, and does crochet and other crafts. Her ropework baskets are available at The Jungle Farm’s General Store.

“I’m so excited to be at The Jungle Farm! They are so welcoming – they have so many people coming through and such a variety of things happening out there. It certainly seems THE place to be!”
